Oman Study Tour - Day 1

Hi all! Tonight is our second night in our hotel → Ibis Hotel in Muscat Oman To start from the beginning of our trip. We had a smooth, quick, and comfy ride to the airport where we checked in our bags and headed to security which was surprisingly a quick process. The flight to Qatar was about 12 hours, which I slept through most of :)) Every three hours we were given hearty meals from the flight attendants with supplementary snacks in between, like popcorn and pretzels. We started with dinner to get accustomed to the time difference, had lunch three hours later, and then breakfast which was perfect because we landed in Qatar very early. When we landed in Qatar, we had fun running to catch our next hour and a half flight to Oman where we would be spending the next three nights and four days. Here we are safe and sound after our 2 flights anticipating a shower and a fun day ahead! About an hour after our arrival we met in the lobby of our hotel and walked to a nearby turkish restaurant. Here we had amazing salad, 2 meters of fresh pita bread with hummus, and Shawarma! YUMM After our delicious meal we took a quick trip to Muscat/ original muscat and visited a museum that the Sultan Qaboos had designed himself which showed us a more in depth understanding of the rich history behind old Muscat which was shown to us by our funny tour guide Abdul! (We weren’t permitted to take pictures) But it sure was an amazing museum, The following picture is the entrance to it where we were permitted to take photos :) Right by the museum was a beautiful palace owned by the Sultan himself where we learned about how it welcomes foreign heads of state/ diplomats. Pictured below as well, is a small glimpse of a fort protecting old Muscat. The forts we visited the first day of our trip and today (which Paige will get into) were so significant in defeating the Portugese who attempted for 150 YEARS to take over Oman but failed miserably. To wrap up our night we headed to the nearby souq (market) where we exchanged our USD for the Omani Riyal and bought nice souvenirs for those of you at home! Some of us bought bracelets, pashmina scarves, spices, keychains and more !! We learned the significance of frankincense and its huge role it plays in Omani culture as well as how it contributes to Omani trade and the Omani household traditions. Before heading to our Hotel we had a hefty dinner at Bait Al Luban where some of us ordered traditional Omani food of shuwa which is meat marinated with spices and then wrapped in sacks made of dry banana or palm leaves which is cooked underground from 6-24 hrs accompanied with rice and signature mint lemonade. Group Photo to commemorate our first day ! Good bye! مع السلامه! -Kemberly D
